Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the VB1 Pro Kit, ordering, compatibility, and joining the Vox Boy community.
Why does the VB1 Pro Kit cost $3,499? +
This isn't a starter kit — it's a fully engineered, professional-grade portable studio built for serious voice actors, podcasters, and creators who need broadcast-quality sound anywhere.
Vox Boy isn't a mic and an interface thrown into a case. It's a curated, integrated system using premium gear from Universal Audio, Beyerdynamic, and Nanuk — pre-wired, travel-ready, shock-protected, heat-managed, and record-ready the moment you open it.
It replaces:
- A home studio setup
- A portable recording rig
- A travel case with shock protection
- Mic modeling tools
- Hours of assembly, wiring, testing, and returns
And most importantly — it replaces studio rental costs, downtime, and lost opportunities.
Launch Edition pricing: The first production run is available at $2,999 ($500 off) for Founding Operators. Regular price is $3,499.
What would it cost to buy everything separately? +
Your answer hereHere's a rough breakdown of what each component costs individually:
- UA Apollo Solo Interface — $699
- UA SC-1 Mic + Hemisphere Modeling — $499
- Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro Headphones — $179
- Nanuk 935 Protective Case — $360
- Custom foam, inserts, tray, wiring, mini boom — $350–$500
- Mic stand, XLR, USB-C/Thunderbolt cabling — $125
- Pop filter, acoustic accessories — $150
- Travel protection engineering — $200
- Labor, assembly, testing — $200–$350
Total DIY cost: $2,750–$3,200+ — and you're still not record-ready. No integrated boom arm, no tray engineering, no heat management, no warranty on the build, and no portability.
The VB1 Pro gives you all of that for $2,999 at launch — professionally assembled and ready to record in minutes..
Can I pay in monthly installments? +
Yes. Through Shop Pay Installments, you can spread payments over 12, 18, or 24 months (subject to approval).
- $2,999 (Launch Edition) — ~$138/mo
- $3,499 (Regular Price) — ~$160/mo
One booked narration, podcast read, or corporate VO job per month can cover your payment. Voiceover sessions regularly pay $200–$500+.
Instead of spending months piecing together gear, you get everything on Day 1 and start earning with it immediately.
Can't I just use a cheaper USB mic or starter kit? +
If you're testing voiceover as a hobby, sure. But once you're auditioning professionally, USB mics, generic interfaces, and $199 bundles won't cut it.
The VB1 Pro includes:
- Universal Audio Apollo Solo (studio-grade conversion)
- UA SC-1 Mic with Hemisphere Modeling (Neumann, Telefunken, AKG profiles)
- Beyerdynamic studio monitoring headphones
- Integrated, adjustable mic boom arm
- Shock-protected, heat-managed, flight-ready Nanuk enclosure
- Patent-pending Hexium™ tray — engineered for stability, airflow, and instant setup
You're not just improving sound quality — you're removing excuses and enabling opportunity.
Is a more affordable "Standard Kit" coming? +
Yes — a streamlined Standard Kit is in development for creators who want to start at a lower price point while still getting Vox Boy engineering.
That said, with Shop Pay Installments, you can get the VB1 Pro today for as little as ~$138/month and hit the ground running with everything you need. No patchwork gear. No future upgrades required. This is a one-time investment in your creative career.
Unlike other creative businesses, you're not selling inventory — you're selling your voice. Every job you land is pure profit once the kit is paid off.
Is the gear pre-installed, or do I have to set it up myself? +
Your VB1 Pro arrives fully assembled and ready to use. The microphone, audio interface, cabling, and accessories are all pre-installed into the custom Hexium™ tray. Open the case, plug into your laptop, and you're recording.
One last step: software installation
You'll need to download the Universal Audio drivers and UAD Console software from uaudio.com. The original Apollo Solo box is included in your shipment with setup instructions.
Does the VB1 Pro come with a laptop? +
No — and that's by design. A laptop is a deeply personal choice, and most creators already own one. We didn't want to inflate the kit price or lock you into a specific machine.
If you don't own a Mac laptop, you'll need one to use the current VB1 Pro (the Apollo Solo Thunderbolt requires macOS). Any Mac with Thunderbolt/USB-C that meets UA's system requirements will work — including budget-friendly options.
Your laptop doesn't just run the software — it actually powers the entire kit, including the Apollo Solo and SC-1 mic (phantom power), with no external adapters or batteries needed.
Can I use my own microphone or audio interface? +
Currently, no. The VB1 Pro is precision-engineered around the UA SC-1 microphone and Apollo Solo interface. This ensures a perfect, secure fit, clean cable management, and true plug-and-play performance.
We're actively developing modular and customizable kits for future releases — designed to support a wider range of microphones, interfaces, and preferences. More tray configurations are on the way.
What if I already have my own headphones? +
No problem. When selecting your VB1 Pro Kit, you'll have the option to exclude the headphones from your order.
The SC-1 Microphone and Apollo Solo Interface come standard and cannot be removed or swapped — they're core to the system's performance and integration.
I already own a UA Apollo Twin — can I use that instead of the Solo? +
The VB1 Pro was purpose-built around the Apollo Solo for three reasons: it's more compact, it's bus-powered (no external power supply), and the internal tray and cable routing are custom-designed for its exact footprint.
Owning both is actually a win
Leave your Twin at home for high-powered sessions. Take your Solo on the road with the VB1 Pro always prepped and ready. UA's plugin ecosystem works seamlessly across both interfaces using the same account — no re-purchasing or reinstallation required.
One for home. One for the road. No compromises.
Does the tray come out of the case? +
Yes, the Hexium™ tray is fully removable — but the kit is designed for you to record directly from the open case.
That said, removing the tray can be useful: place it on top of the closed case for a more elevated mic position, or stand the open case vertically like a book to use as a makeshift sound shield while using the tray separately.
What recording software should I use? Does Vox Boy include a DAW? +
The kit does not include a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), but your Apollo Solo does come bundled with Universal Audio's Realtime Analog Classics plugin bundle and the UAD Console app for routing and monitoring.
Recommended DAWs
- Mac: GarageBand (free), Logic Pro (professional-grade), Reaper (affordable and versatile)
- PC: Reaper, Audacity (free), Adobe Audition, Pro Tools
If you're just starting out on Mac, GarageBand is free and capable. When you're ready to level up, Logic Pro is the natural next step. We also highly recommend YouTube tutorials — nearly every workflow question has been covered by working pros.
Does the VB1 Pro work with Mac, PC, or both? +
The current VB1 Pro is Mac-only, using the Universal Audio Apollo Solo Thunderbolt 3 — designed for macOS systems with Thunderbolt 3/4 ports (MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, 2016 and newer).
A PC-compatible version using the Apollo Solo USB is in active development. If you're a Windows user, you can join our PC Version Waitlist to be notified when it's available.
Important: The two Apollo Solo versions are not cross-compatible. Thunderbolt = Mac. USB = Windows. Make sure your laptop's port type matches the interface in your kit.
Will my laptop fit inside the Vox Boy case? +
The VB1 Pro supports laptops up to 10 inches in depth (measured from hinge to front edge when closed).
Confirmed compatible:
- MacBook Pro 14" and 16" (2021–2025 models)
- MacBook Air 13"/15"
- Slim PC laptops from 13"–14" screen sizes
- Tablets with detachable keyboards (iPad Pro, Surface Pro)
Won't fit:
- Most 17" and 18" laptops
- Gaming/workstation laptops with bulky cooling
- Older laptops with deeper chassis designs
If you're close to the limit, send us your model specs and we'll verify the fit.
Can I use a tablet (iPad/Android) instead of a laptop? +
iPads and Android tablets are not compatible. The Apollo Solo requires UAD Console software and drivers, which only run on macOS or Windows.
Windows tablet-PCs like the Surface Pro 7/8/9 (with Intel or AMD chips) are compatible — they're essentially full Windows laptops in tablet form and can run the Apollo Solo USB version.
Note: Windows on ARM devices (like the Surface Pro X) are not supported by Universal Audio drivers.
If you're placing a tablet in your kit, we recommend a slim neoprene sleeve to prevent shifting during transport.
Do I need external power for my Apollo Solo? +
Nope. The Apollo Solo is bus-powered — it draws power directly from your laptop via a single cable. No external power supply required.
- Thunderbolt version (Mac): Powered via Thunderbolt 3
- USB version (Windows, coming soon): Powered via USB 3.0
As long as you're using a compatible Mac or PC, your entire VB1 Pro Kit runs off your laptop's power — making it truly mobile.
Where do Vox Boy Kits ship from? +
All orders ship from our fulfillment facility in El Cajon, California (San Diego County). We work closely with our assembly and logistics partner, Fuerte Cases, to ensure every kit is securely packed and shipped.
How long does processing and shipping take? +
Each kit is assembled to order. Please allow 2–4 business days for processing before your order ships.
Shipping options (U.S. only):
- Free Shipping (5–8 business days) — on all orders over $1,000
- Standard Ground (3–4 business days) — $19.90
- Expedited (1–2 business days) — $69.99
Delivery estimates begin after processing is complete. Kits weigh 25–27 lbs and ship in rugged oversized boxes — the expedited rate reflects actual carrier costs for heavy parcels. We don't mark up shipping.
Limited batches: VB1 Pro Kits are produced in limited runs. Once a run sells out, the kit is unavailable until the next batch is manufactured.
Do you ship internationally? +
Currently, we ship within the United States only. We're actively working on international logistics and compliance.
If you're outside the U.S. and interested in ordering, email us at sales@voxboy.com to discuss options on a case-by-case basis.
Will I receive tracking info? +
Yes — once your order ships, you'll receive a confirmation email with tracking details. If you haven't received tracking within 4 business days of ordering, contact us at sales@voxboy.com.
What if my package is lost or stolen? +
Once a package is marked "Delivered" by the carrier, Vox Boy is not liable for lost or stolen items. If you believe your package is missing, contact the carrier first with your tracking number. If you need help, email us and we'll do our best to assist.
Is there a warranty or return policy? +
Manufacturer warranties (gear inside your kit)
- Universal Audio (Apollo Solo, SC-1 Mic): Covered by UA's manufacturer warranty (typically 1 year). Register directly with UA.
- Beyerdynamic (Headphones): Covered by Beyerdynamic's manufacturer warranty (typically 2 years). Register for full support.
Vox Boy warranty (case & tray)

- Get your RMA — We'll send a Return Merchandise Authorization number and return address.
- Ship it back — Customers pay return shipping unless the item is defective or incorrect. Use a trackable method.
- Inspection & refund — Processed within 5–7 business days of receipt.
30-day return window on complete kits in like-new condition. Returns without prior approval will not be processed.
Don't I need a sound booth to record voice over? +
No — this is a common misconception. While professional studios use vocal booths, excellent voice over can be recorded without one when you have the right gear and technique.
The VB1 Pro case lid is lined with acoustic foam, offering built-in sound dampening when opened. The portable design lets you adapt to your surroundings and achieve near-studio results in many environments.
Best on-the-go recording spots
- Hotel rooms
- Parked cars (surprisingly great acoustics)
- Closets and small carpeted rooms
- Any space with soft furnishings
High-quality voice over comes down to environment + mic technique + proper preamp settings. We'll be sharing sound-tweaking tips, presets, and environment-specific settings regularly on voxboy.com.
What if I'm traveling and don't have internet to send recordings? +
This is a common scenario for voice actors on the go. A few tips:
- Record first, upload later. Store sessions locally on your laptop and send them when you're back online.
- Use your phone's hotspot. Tether your laptop for a quick connection — it's a lifesaver in remote areas.
- Compress for speed. Bounce a smaller MP3 preview for audition approvals, then send full WAVs when needed.
- Cloud-sync when you reconnect. Tools like Dropbox, Google Drive, or WeTransfer queue uploads and resume automatically.
I'm brand new to recording. What happens after I buy? +
Your kit arrives ready to record. We highly recommend diving into voice over — it's one of the most accessible and rewarding paths for new creators, and it's our specialty at Vox Boy.
Getting started
Create profiles on trusted casting platforms like Voices.com and Voice123.com. These host thousands of daily auditions for commercials, video games, animation, audiobooks, e-learning, corporate videos, and more.
With your VB1 Pro, a quiet space, and some hustle, you could land a paid gig that covers the cost of your kit from a single project.
Isn't AI taking over voice over jobs? +
Far from it. While AI-generated voices have made headlines, the demand for real human voices has never been higher. The world is producing more content than ever, and clients want authentic, emotionally intelligent performances.
Where human VO talent is thriving
TV and radio commercials, animation, video games, audiobooks, podcasts, YouTube, corporate narration, film trailers, promos, IVR systems, and more. These industries require connection, nuance, and personality — things AI still can't replicate.
AI can mimic what already exists. You bring originality, improvisation, and your own unique fingerprint to every read.
Are more kits coming for music, podcasting, and other creative needs? +
Yes — we're developing new kits tailored for music production, podcasting, and other creative workflows. But the VB1 Pro is already versatile out of the box:
- Solo podcasting — broadcast-quality episodes from anywhere
- Vocals — studio-level vocal takes on the go
- Instruments — plug in directly using the Apollo Solo's Hi-Z ¼" jack for guitar/instrument tracking
Think of the VB1 Pro as your all-in-one creative station. Future kits will deliver even more specialized solutions.
What does "Founding Operator" mean? Why is the first run discounted? +
Our first production run is intentionally small — and the $500 discount isn't a sale. It's an invitation.
Founding Operators are the first creators to put the VB1 Pro through real-world use. You're helping us test, refine, and improve the product in exchange for a permanent connection to our team and meaningful benefits:
- Real-world testing partnership. We engineered the VB1 Pro to be tough and light — our Hexium™ tray walks a careful balance between strength and weight. We need your miles, your flights, and your sessions to prove that balance is right.
- If something breaks, we fix it free. If any component needs a redesign based on your feedback, we'll engineer an improved version and ship it to you at no cost. You helped us find it — you get the fix first.
- Shared sound profiles. We'll be sharing UA Console settings optimized for specific environments (hotel rooms, home offices, open spaces) — and we want yours too. Your best settings get shared with the community, with credit.
- Your story, amplified. Send us your setup photos, your recording stories, your wins. We'll feature Founding Operators on our website, social media, and marketing. You're part of the Vox Boy origin story.
- Direct line to the team. No support tickets. No chatbots. A private feedback channel to our co-founders and product team.
- Priority on future releases. New kits, accessories, and tray configurations — Founding Operators get first access and exclusive pricing.
This isn't just a transaction. It's a partnership. You're helping us build the standard for portable recording — and we're making sure you always have the best version of what we create together.
Do you offer training, coaching, or support? +
We're building something real — not a quick tips course. While we don't currently offer formal training or coaching, it's something we're actively developing. When we launch it, it'll be a solid, intensive resource designed to genuinely jumpstart your career — not just take your money for a few pointers.
In the meantime, check back regularly at voxboy.com for updates on new kits, sound profiles, recording tips, and community features. We're building a community of creators who support each other's audio journey.
