Riverside and Zencastr Record Locally. That Puts It on Your Gear.

Remote podcast recording platforms solved the wrong problem brilliantly, and a lot of hosts have drawn the wrong conclusion from it.
Riverside, Zencastr and SquadCast all record each participant locally — on their own machine, not through the call. Riverside captures uncompressed 48kHz WAV and video up to 4K, then uploads the files after the session. Zencastr does the same for audio, keeping separate tracks per guest. A dropped connection mangles the conversation you hear in the moment but leaves the recorded files intact.
That's genuinely excellent engineering. It also means something people miss.
The platform doesn't improve your audio. It preserves it.
Local recording is faithful, not corrective. Whatever your microphone and interface hand the machine is exactly what lands in the finished file — noise floor, room reflections, preamp hiss and all. The compression you hear during a laggy call is a symptom of the live stream, not the recording. When the WAV arrives clean, it arrives clean at whatever quality your hardware produced.
So the ceiling on your remote podcast audio isn't Riverside or Zencastr. It's the signal chain sitting between your mouth and your laptop.
You control exactly one side of the conversation
This is the part worth being honest about, because no platform and no kit changes it: each participant is responsible for their own local audio. If your guest is on laptop speakers in a kitchen, no amount of gear on your end fixes their track.
What you can control is that your side is never the weak one. A real preamp into proper conversion means your track is the one the editor doesn't have to rescue — and on a two-person show, one clean track carries a surprising amount of the finished episode.
If you're recording two people in the same room, the argument gets stronger. Two independent mic preamps means two fully separate tracks, so you can level and edit each voice on its own instead of fighting a shared channel.
What to actually check before your next remote session
- Confirm the platform is set to record locally, not cloud-only — it's a setting, and defaults change
- Record a 30-second test and listen to the downloaded file, not the live monitor
- Check your noise floor with nobody speaking. That hiss is in every episode you've published
- Send guests a one-line brief: wired headphones, quiet room, closed windows
