Designed for Vox Boy VB-1 on Windows

This guide follows the Apollo Solo USB path: a compatible Windows PC, a USB 3/4 connection, and the Solo’s external power adapter. The USB model is not powered by the laptop’s USB connection.

Already own the Thunderbolt Solo? That is a separate hardware path. It requires a supported Windows Thunderbolt system and the correct cable. A USB-C-shaped port or adapter does not make the two models interchangeable. The PDF explains this distinction before installation.

What You’ll Learn

  • Check your Apollo model, Windows compatibility, cable, and power connection
  • Prepare Windows for stable recording
  • Install UA Connect, UAD DSP software, drivers, and UAD Console
  • Complete Apollo registration and authorize your DSP plug-ins
  • Finish a firmware update if prompted
  • Connect the SC-1 to MIC input 1 and enable 48V phantom power
  • Select the Universal Audio USB ASIO driver and record a mono test
  • Troubleshoot missing audio, doubled monitoring, and clicks or pops

Before You Start

Check Universal Audio’s current requirements for your exact PC. Apollo Solo USB supports compatible Intel/AMD Windows systems; Windows on ARM/Snapdragon is incompatible with UA hardware and software. Start with a built-in USB port, a reliable data cable, and enough disk space for the software. A charge-only cable will not do the job.

Install, Register, and Authorize

With the Solo USB connected and powered, install UA Connect for Windows. Open Apollo & UAD-2, install the UAD software and Console, and restart when requested.

Registration is completed through UAD software and the UA browser registration page. If that page does not open, use UAD Meter & Control Panel β†’ Plug-Ins β†’ Authorize Plug-Ins. UA Connect provides the installer; it does not directly add Apollo hardware.

A Good Voice-Over Starting Level

Connect the SC-1 to rear input 1/L, select MIC, and enable 48V after connecting it. Speak toward the side with the UA badge. Start with PAD off and raise input gain until your loudest reads peak around -12 dBFS without clipping.

That is an input-level starting point, not a final delivery loudness target. Set headphone volume separately.

Your First Windows Recording

In a supporting DAW, select the Universal Audio USB ASIO driver for input and output. Create a mono input 1 track. Start at 48 kHz / 24-bit unless the client asks for something else, and listen through Console with the DAW’s live input monitoring switched off.

Record a normal line, a louder line, and a few seconds of room tone. Stop and play back the actual recording. The PDF includes Windows/WDM app setup, sample-rate checks, buffer settings, and USB troubleshooting.
